Refit of RFA Ft Victoria

Working for the Cammell Laird shipyard in Birkenhead on the MOD Cluster through life support contract, Seaking Electrical have carried out extensive electrical design, project management and installation. The major part of the installations were;

The Installation and load testing of 6 new KW generators and the Ballast Water Treatment System. Design and supply of a new telephone exchange.

Other works included removal and Replacement of: Boilers and Clarifiers, Evaporators, Flowmeters to the AVCAT cargo system. Power supplies and starters for new Lifeboat installations. Engine room Local application fire suppression system. Replacement of incandescent engine room and On Deck lighting with LED lights.

The SeaKing Group were engaged by Naval Architects Houlder ltd to survey the 415v switchboard prior to the proposed installation of 5 new 400kw Caterpillar Generators complete with C18 engines. Calculations for fault levels were undertaken, completed and submitted to class.

Then in conjuction with A&P Falmouth shipyard’s project team we removed existing redundant cables and carried out modifications of the switchboard to incorporate new circuit breakers, generator controls and generator repeater panels. The existing generator circuit breakers were upgraded from obsolete Merlin Gerin Selpact range to modern Schneider Masterpact units complete with Micrologic 5.0P controllers. New generator starting batteries, generator control panel, power supplies were installed. Interfacing the new generator control panels into the ships alarm system. Finally we demonstrated generator operations and shutdown alarms to Lloyds.

The SeaKing Group carried out complex cabling work on the vessel for Cammell Laird. The project saw the ferry split in half with a new middle section inserted. This required SeaKing to cut, upgrade and reconnect electrical systems via the new section.

“Key aspects involved mapping the existing electrical system and upgrading infrastructure to drive greater efficiency. All the existing cables were mapped with the addition of new cables for the new control systems. A new propulsion engine and propeller unit was installed together with a new bow thruster fitted to improve operation in high winds. These systems needed to be controlled from both the bridge and the bow. A new auto-pilot system was also fitted. In total, the project involved 60pc new electrical installation work and 40pc refurbishment work to the existing system.”

The SeaKing Group also installed a fire detection panel and removed the radio and navigation systems to allow the vessel interior to be repainted before re-installing them.

MY KOGO – 71.8M

This contract was such a success that Svitzer gave the SeaKing Group an achievement award for electrical maintenance. The SeaKing Group Business Development Manager Neil Mellenchip said:

“This was a terrific contract to work on which really showcased the range of services we offer the super yacht sector, which is a key growth sector for us. We sent six marine technicians to work on the MY Kogo upgrade which was a complex and demanding job. Work included the installation of helicopter landing lights, earth monitoring systems as well as CCTV, WIFI and alarm networks. Other new equipment installed included an advanced DALI lighting system and a Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System.

We were also responsible for upgrading the on board Crestron control, media distribution and entertainment network with a brand new KNX system. Further work saw modifications to guest cabins, bridge wings, air compressors, the air handling plant and the ships lift. In addition the SeaKing Group was responsible for the calibration of the ships combinators.”

This project was for the design and installation of the electrical system for a 16 metre Windfarm support boat. The SeaKing Group also built and installed several panels including the navigation, bilge, clutch control and automatic mains change over switch panels.

Island Escape

This 9 week project out in Portugal was for the refit of lighting, telecoms, data and TV Aerials in 77 cabins. Plus a full overhaul of the ships PA & fire alarm system.

Celebrity Galaxy

This project saw the SeaKing Group install a new LED lighting system and dedicated power for LAN outlets for computers and POS equipment, all whilst the vessel was in for dry docking in Bremerhaven.

Bibby Sapphire

The North Sea dive support vessel ‘Bibby Sapphire’ had several modifications carried out by the SeaKing Group during a recent dry docking at Cammel Laird’s shipyard in Merseyside. These included the installation of an emergency power generator, renewal of all five decompression chamber cable penetrators, hot water and HERS control system modifications. The SeaKing Group also also made improvements to the engine start panel and clump winch, together with improvements to the external deck lighting.

MV Chartwell

This project included a complete strip out and rewire of the survey vessel ‘MV Chartwell’ plus the remanufacture and installation of new 220v distribution board and bilge pump controls. The SeaKing Group engineers also installed new fire detection, data and communications systems as well as supplying and fitting two new Stamford generators. We also completed a full bridge instrument refurbishment.

Liverpool Viking

This project was a fault finding mission on a bow thruster generator which had a tripping problem. The SeaKing Group engineers noted that the frequency and voltage curves did not appear correct for the method of starting and it emerged that the voltage was collapsing during the initial load increase. This in turn pointed towards an excitation or AVR problem. Our team of engineers solved this problem by fitting a new AVR.

The Delta ARRC Rig support Craft

The SeaKing Group provided a team of 4 electrical installation personnel, who over a period of six months have installed the entire electrical system on a sequence of eight workboats. The workboats are designed for the support of offshore facilities and personnel.
